Here's the rundown of our holiday celebrations: Dec 23rd- Candlelight service at church and family picture fiascoe. Dec 24th- Lenz family PJ night- we lounged, we pigged out, we Charlie Browned it up. Dec 25th- Loralie awoke to a tree full of awesomeness. Her little face was priceless when she saw her Elmo. She was more than excited. She also got a ride on car, a cookies and milk game, a baby stroller, a ball, some paints (yes paints, what the heck was I thinking), and a wagon with blocks. That night the Brummetts came over for a delicious dinner. Dad made prime rib, and I made the rest- roasted asparagus, scalloped potatoes, spiced peaches, garlic cheese buscuits, and salad. Yes, I know. I rock. And my snowman tablescape was super cute. Later, we did some amazing Christmas kareoke, because I couldn't talk anyone into caroling... Oh, also, we got about two feet of snow, so Caleb took Loralie out in it for about five minutes, which she thouroughly UN-enjoyed. Dec 26th-...

Okay, I admit it. I am the type of person who kind of builds things up in my head (Clark Griswald style) and then gets frustrated when they don't turn out like the norman Rockwell painting I was envisioning. Perfect example, last night was our churches candlelight service. I had been scouring the stores for months to find Loralie the perfect christmas outfit to wear, and I had it in my head that our family, scrubbed and spiffed, would get our picture taken in front of the huge Christmas tree at church. Well, to start with, 20 minutes before we were supposed to be leaving for church, I put Loralie's little skirt on her, and it fell to the floor! Her butt is so tiny, it could not support the skirt! I had to do some tailoring magic and take about three inches off of the waistband! One of the selling features of this little christmas outfit is that it came with a matching headband. Well, Loralie's crazy hair wouldn't stay out of her eyes with a mere headband, so i ha...

In the last two weeks the following items have broken in our home: dishwasher, hot water heater, ice maker, printer, and downstairs toilet!!!! AHHH! Fortunately none of the repairs were major at this point, but poor Caleb has been quite the busy boy trying to keep up with the long "to-do" list! I am so blessed to have a husband who knows how to fix stuff!

One of the things that I find so amazing about being Loralie's mom, is the way that she learns things so abruptly. It has been like this for all of her major milestones- one day she can't roll over, the next she is a rolling maching. One day I sit her up, and she just never falls over, she is able to sit up all by herself from then on. Recently, it has been walking. I was sort of expecting her to take a few steps one day, and fall over, take a few steps the next day, fall over. You get the idea. That is not how it has gone down at all! She just decided one day that she could walk, and she has been walking ever since. It was just so abrupt! She is running all over the place now. I love it when she runs over to me and lands in a big hug. Those are the best. And on a slightly related note, she is learning new words like crazy (probably because both of her parents are LOUD.) Here is the list of words she can say at almost 14 months: mama, dada, dog, up, more, done, on,...

Last night I was working an event, when I took a much needed pee break. After completing my business and standing to exit the stall I hear a "plop" and realize with horror, that my I-phone (which was in my back pocket) has taken a dip in the porcelin swimming pool! "NOOOOOOO!" I yell, and plunge my hand into the fresh urine to retrieve the phone, which is practically an appendige to my body. I hastily dry the phone (and wash my hands :) and then attempt to turn the phone back on. NO luck. I completely shut the thing down and put it in a bowl or rice, as I had heard that that can help suck up the moisture. It sat in that all night, but when I tried it this morning, it still didn't work. Anyways, Caleb bought me a new one, and we are still hoping that the old one will dry out and Caleb will have bought himself a new i-phone (he has always had phone envy). I will keep you posted on if the rice thing works or not!

In the begining Niki created a Blog- and it was good. Or so I think. I am always interested in my own thoughts and goings on, so maybe you will be too! Or maybe you won't but I don't care because my blog is mostly just for me. I used to always keep a journal when I was a kid, and I always think it is fun to go back and read what you have written about your life. So much is forgotten if not recorded, right? I have had blogs on Myspace, and on facebook, but I was hoping to be able to combine them into one moster blog. So if you want, you can join me! And, on the seventh day, Niki rested.

Wednesday night Caleb and I were getting ready to go to bed, and he was like "do you want to just drive to bolivar right now?" Loralie was already asleep, and I figured she would sleep in the car, so I was like "okay!". So we headed out at 11:00pm and arrived at 1:30 am Thursday. The funny part was that Loralie didn't sleep in the car the whole way! She was really quiet, but her eyes were open the whole time! I was thinking, well, at least she will go right to sleep when we get there! Imagine my surprise when she refused to sleep until 3:00am and then woke up in the morning at 6:00! So night two of our adventure in Bolivar, we wanted to make sure that she got to bed on time, and she did. But she wouldn't go to sleep! She kept crying and crying and I was wracking my brains trying to figure out how to get her to sleep, when I heard the I-phone commericial in my head "there's an ap for that!" I plugged it in next to her crib, found a pandora radio...

Last night was the most fun Halloween I have had in years! Caleb and I spent the afternoon carving awesome pumpkins and roasting pumpkin seeds. Then it was time to get Loralue in her outfit. She was the cutest little pumpkin I have ever seen! We pulled her around the neighborhood in a little wagon and she had lots of fun dropping candy in and out of her little bucket. She got to try a piece of chocolate, and her little eyes just lit up pike she had just discovered something wonderful! She got it all over her face and gobbled it all up! Must have been all that chocolate I fed her invetro! Ha! We got home early and answered the door for a while, and then it was time for Loralies bath and bed. Good friends came over and we had a table full of scary snacks and watched a cheesy vampire movie from the 80's! Good times!

Loralie celebrated her very first birthday on Sunday with a rubber ducky themed party. Mom went a little nutso on the theme (hey, I am an event planner, it's what I do!), so there were rubber duckies galore! I made the cake myself (thank you very much!), and I think it turned out super cute. All of Loralie's guest had to get their pictures taken in the fake bath tub! Loralie wore a special ducky dress that Grandma Lenz made for her. Overall, there was a lot of present opening, cake smearing, and giggling. I didn't manage to get a picture of her smearing her little cake on herself because I was busy cutting the big cake for the grown-ups. But I know there are pictures out there somewhere (Aunt Michelle or Grandma Lenz will have to send them to me later!) I can't believe my little girl is a whole year old!

So yesterday Caleb and I were cleaning what we refer to as "his" room ( I just close the door most days and pretend it isn't a disaster area in there). We had Loralie's birthday presents (unwrapped) piled up on the bed. She was in there with us, playing on the floor, and I said to Caleb "Uh oh, maybe she shouldn't be in here. She might see her presents!" We both chuckled, as babies are mostly oblivious to their surroundings. Ha ha. As I picked Loralie up to leave the room, she spotted the huge bead maze on the bed. Her little face lit up with excitement. She pointed, clapped her hands, pointed, and looked at me expectantly. Uhh... now what do I do? I ushered her out of the room as she began to scream and point at the toy that was not destined to be hers for another three weeks. So much for oblivion.

I just signed up for this "Mommy and Me" exercise class. The description was something like "enjoy interactive exercises with your baby, and the company of other mothers", but what it should have said is "run a million suicides while your baby watches and laughs from the stroller, and attempt to do wall sits while holding twenty pounds weights while your baby laughs, and then keep doing push ups, even though your baby is now screaming and wants down." Uhg. We are doing stuff in this class that I haven't attempted since high school! When is the last time you did lunges with one foot up on a wall??? Pretty much everything that I HATE to do in a workout, we have managed to get into the three classes I have now gone to: suicides, plank, push ups, and tricept push-ups. Today, there was literally sweat dripping off my face!!! When is the last time I worked out that hard? Oh, we also had to jog with a foam ball between our knees while pushing our strollers. W...

I just listened to Caleb do a puppet show for loralie with her dolly and three bears. It started out pretty normal. "Hey bear, let's go for a walk. La la la la. Okay, here we are back at home. Uh Oh, the door's open... YOU COVER THE BACK!!! KITCHEN"S CLEAR! oh, no, someone ate your porriage! WHO DOES THAT??? (Loralie is looking confused at this point). WE HAVE A SUSPECT IN THE BEDROOM. FREEZE! HANDS ON YOUR HEAD! GET DOWN GET DOWN!!!!! Unfortunatley, Goldilocks tries to run for it, and she gets two caps to the back of the head. At this point I am scolding Caleb for the amount of violence in his fairytales, and Loralie is rolling on the floor laughing. The End.

So, Loralie has sort of a love/hate relationship with our dog, Scooter. Tonight, while she was taking a bath, he kept putting his little paws up on the edge of the tub. She was sqealing with delight, and trying to hand him her duckies, which was driving him crazy. He likes to chew them (grrr), so you could tell he was thinking about jumping right into the tub to get them. She would start to hand him one, and then put it into her mouth instead. He was literally crying. Ahh, sibling rivalry. I managed to get a picture of the chaos (don't you just love camera phones?)

I have been doing a terrible job blogging since Loralie was born, but at least I am pretty good at posting pics every now and then. I have a lot of stuff to report. For one thing, baby is officially crawling now. She started in August (10 months old). It is just amazing to watch her now. She gets into all sorts of things that she shouldn't (particularly electrical cords). It is sort of fun to see her express her independence, by going where she wants to go and playing with what she wants to play with! We just took her on her first vacation to Florida. She did great on the plane, sleeping almost the whole time. She wasn't really a fan of the pack and play that she was supposed to sleep in at the hotel, though. She actually eneded up "sleeping" with us one of the nights. Nobody did much sleeping. It is like having a live gopher in your bed. She was sideways between Caleb and I most of the night, so we looked like a letter H. That way, she could jab me in the nose with h...

I have a question for all you mama's out there... Loralie has always hated "tummy time". She generaly screamed the whole time she was on her tummy, but we still made her do it every day because all the experts say it is so important. Well, recently she has gotten REALLY good at rolling over, so much so that she starts "rolling" before her tummy ever hits the floor! No more tummy time for me, Mom. Nice try. Anyways, now I am a little worried that she will skip the whole crawling phase, which some other moms have told me is fine. Not fine for me though, as an ex-K teacher who had it drilled into our heads that it is BAD when babies don't crawl before they walk. Something with develping the cerebral cortex? Anyways, I was wondering if any of your babies had an aversion to tummy time but still managed to crawl??? Loralile is eight months old now, and all the baby books are saying "your baby is probably crawling all over the place now..." Uh, no. I know...

Loralie is at an age now where Caleb and I can just watch her and watch her, as she is so very entertaining. Today, I ate a powerbar and she entertained herself (and us) with the wrapper for about twenty minutes. First, she ripped it in half and was delighted that she now had TWO shiny toys. They she alternated putting each one in her mouth and making the crunchy sound. She tried to see what would happen if she put one in mommy's mouth (no luck). She crunched them in her little hands and clapped them together. So, sorry Playskool, Powerbar has invented the funnest baby toy ever.

My blessings, that is. Today I turn 29, and as I look back on this last year, I can't belive all the changes that have happened in our lives! At this time last year, I was hugely pregnant and working at a job that didn't make me happy. Fast forward one year (and it really does seem as though it was fast forwarded!) and we have a beautiful daughter and I own my own business and get to do a job that I really enjoy! Thank you Jesus! So, I am not freaked out to be turning 29 today. That just means I have gotten to experience God's blessings for 29 fantastic years! "When your worried, and you can't sleep, Just count your blessings, instead of sheep! And you'll fall asleep, counting your blessings! When your bank roll is getting small, just think of when you had none at all. And you'll fall asleep, counting your blessings!" ~Mr. Bing Crosby

The Mother's Day brunch went off without a hitch at the Tuscan Ballroom. We had about 175 people there, and I think I heard about 165 people say that the food was awesome, the decorations were beautiful, and they wanted the recipies for everything. But of course, there always has to be SOMEONE unhappy, now doesn't there? I was the hostess for this event, So I checked people in as they arrived (they were supposed to make reservations) and escorted them to their tables. There was a party of ten that had just arrived, and I escorted them to two tables right next to each other. They said that that was unacceptable, that they had to be at the same table. I told them that our tables are only meant to seat 8-9, but if they wanted to squish in, I would be happy to steal some chairs and silverware from another table. They said that was also unacceptable. So with a big smile on my face I said "What would you like me to do?" They wanted me to push the two tables together. Fine. ...

Here's something I have been thinking about lately. When I was a teacher, there were certain kids who really knew how to push your buttons. The more they pushed, the less love you had for them, if you know what I mean. It is so different with your own kid! Even on days (like today) when she is exhastingly cranky I still love her more today than yesterday! And I guess I always thought that people with special needs kids or sick kids or ugly kids probably loved them IN SPITE of their weaknesses, but the truth is, you just love your kids no matter what. I've realized that I wouldn't love Loralie any less if she were any different than she is. I just love her.

I really can't believe it has been more than six months since we brought Loralie home. There have been so many little things that I want to treasure in my heart, so I thought I better write them down before they are erased by the years. I remember the first time I "saw" her was actually a picture that Caleb took of her after the C-section, and he showed me the picture on the screen. I was so drugged up, I looked at it and said "That's not our baby!". But when I finally got to hold her in my arms (hours later!) I remember being so surprised about how cute she was (I guess I was bracing myself for her to be ugly?) I remember thinking she was so very ROUND (huge round eyes, round little face, round little bow mouth, round cheeks). I remember noticing that where a normal human has a knuckle, my baby had perfect little star shaped dimples. When I was nursing her in the middle of the night, she would put her little hand on my chest. I remember thinking her palm co...

A few weeks ago I was busy painting the bathroom, while Caleb was entertaining Loralie. He came in and said something about how much she loved her "super swing" but I didn't pay much attention because I was up to my elbows in paint. Later he came in to tell me that she was asleep and he was going out. I got to a good stopping place and decided to go check on her, but to my surprise she wasn't in her crib! I went downstairs and THIS is what I saw (see picture). My baby was dangling in her carseat from the banister... sleeping peacefully. I about had a heart attack. Caleb swears that there is no way she could ever fall out, and the straps can hold like two hundred pounds... blah blah blah. Needless to say, the Super Swing is now forbidden.

Last night Caleb was making Loralie laugh so hard it was a good thing she was wearing a diaper cause I bet a little bit of pee came out. Wanna know what was so funny? He was ramming her head into the couch over and over again and making a crashing sound...why didn't I think of that? Oh yeah, cause I try to AVOID crashing her head on things. Silly me. And then he grumbles that she likes to snuggle with me more than him. She has things figured out.

My Jesus Year

I just finished reading this book called "My Jesus Year". It was about a Orthodox Jew who takes a year to immerse himself in Christian culture to see what all the fuss is about. It was an interesting book because it showed what Christianity looks like to an "outsider". There are several things that I observed through his eyes from the book. First of all would be the issue of reverence. Compared to many world religions Christians are probably the least reverent. The term "is nothing holy???" comes to mind. This Jewish man cringed at the way we threw our bibles around and talked about God being our "friend". While it is true that as Christians we do have a close relationship with God, we also need to remember that he is in fact GOD, and not just our buddy. And if we truly believe that the bible is his WORD (which I do) then it should be treated with respect and dignity (and probably not thrown in the backseat of my car, or smooshed under my couch.....

Oh, the fun of teething has begun for miss Loralie... We had a day of a lot of crying. Mommy is worn out! Okay, so throwing the whole schdule out the window yesterday did not have good results. Moderation Niki. Geez. We had one cranky baby on our hands. She barely slept all day, and I was admitadly more confused than usual about what to do at any given moment. And it didn't make her sleep any better at night. Luckily, a wise friend of mine wrote down her baby's schedule for 16 weeks, and I am going to give that a go. It seems very reasonable, and I am a resonable kind of girl. Maybe it is the teacher in me, but I don't like looking at a day stretched out before me without a plan... You know, it is probably just because I don't have a lot of experience with babies. I don't like that she can't just tell me what is the matter with her! But when she gets to be in preschool, LOOK OUT. I got all kinds of tricks up my sleeve for 2-6 year olds!

We have been trying to follow the babywise method since Loralie was born. It seemed to work pretty well until she actually slept through the night, and then we got a little stumped about what to do. The book is rather vaugh (sp?) about how to drop a feeding/or a nap. She started waking up at 5am every morning, and I thought "well, she has already slept through the night for weeks, so she can't be hungry..." poor baby. Your mom is so dumb. So after two weeks of this (her waking up at 5, 5:30, 6, 6:30 AND 7) I finnally gave in last night and fed her at five. She happily went right back to sleep and slept until 9:30! Now that is a schedule I can get behind! Ha! So I think I am going to try to wing it a bit more this week, and not be so strict on the schedule, because I think I know her signals enough now to be able to figure out what she wants. I will let you know in a week if it has totally messed her up or not!

My mom told me this story the other day, and since it is part of my families faith legacy, I thought I should record it for posterity! When my parents were first married and young parents, they were musicians. They played music in nightclubs for a living. Needless to say, the pay wasn't great, but they were livin' the dream! Ha! They managed to buy their first house for a grand total of $5,000, only because it was in the small town my Dad had grown up in, and the bankers all knew him. He put his music equiptment up for collateral! Because they were on the road for months at a time, they had a renter living in the house. They didn't get the notices that the taxes on the house were due... When they finally got back to town, they found that their house was going to be auctioned off for the total due on their taxes- $150. That amount of money seemed tremendous. They had no idea how they would be able to pay it, the only thing they could think to do was to pray. The...

No more news on the Tuscan Ballroom. But for whatever reason, I am not really worried anymore. The more time that I spend with the Father, the more I am convinced that he is using this time "in the wilderness" to prepare us for what lies ahead. He is teaching us to trust him. You can't really say that you trust someone if you are constantly second guessing them, or doubting them. So, I have just decided that I am going to keep striving for my dream, because it was put in my heart by Jesus. I am going to use this time of waiting to draw closer to him, to spend time with him, and to practice living in his constant presence. I am going to look deep within myself and see if there is anything in me that God would like to change. I am going to focus on praising him and thanking him for all the amazing blessings in my life. And everytime that He closes a door, I will know that we are that much closer to the door that he will open. I really think that if I am willing to...

So the goal for this week is to use mypyramid.gov to make sure that I am eating healthy and enough calories to breast feed. I am also going to make sure I work out at least 30 minutes 5 days a week. On an unrealted note, my sweet baby SLEPT THROUGH THE NIGHT last night! 11pm-6am. So that was really exciting for me! Also, we are negotiating a lease for what would be the perfect building for the Tuscan, so say a prayer. I don't want to talk about it too much because I am just waiting for the other shoe to drop, as it usually does. But this could be it!
