My Jesus Year
I just finished reading this book called "My Jesus Year". It was about a Orthodox Jew who takes a year to immerse himself in Christian culture to see what all the fuss is about. It was an interesting book because it showed what Christianity looks like to an "outsider". There are several things that I observed through his eyes from the book. First of all would be the issue of reverence. Compared to many world religions Christians are probably the least reverent. The term "is nothing holy???" comes to mind. This Jewish man cringed at the way we threw our bibles around and talked about God being our "friend". While it is true that as Christians we do have a close relationship with God, we also need to remember that he is in fact GOD, and not just our buddy. And if we truly believe that the bible is his WORD (which I do) then it should be treated with respect and dignity (and probably not thrown in the backseat of my car, or smooshed under my couch...) The second thing that sort of stood out in his encounters with the Christian culture is how we tend to be pretty commercial. There is always something for sale at Christian events, and even many churches. There are millions of products and books you can buy to help you on your spiritual journey. While this is good in some circumstances there is certainly a time and a place for it. And is a REAL spriritual experience ever really for sale? There is a lot of hype to be caught up in... Anyways, the conclusion that the author came to is that all roads lead to God, we have more in common than differences... yada yada crap crap crap. But it was an interesting read. Thoughts???
