Strong winds and a broken fire hydrant hampered fire crews Friday evening as flames destroyed the clubhouse at the Liberty Hills Country Club in Clay County. Smoke and water-flow alarms summoned firefighters at 5:43 p.m. to the empty building, where the kitchen had seen no activity since Christmas, said firefighter Steve Cazzell of the Fishing River Fire Protection District. Crews saw smoke in the upper level of three-level structure at 19808 Route H and reached the suspected origin of the fire in the basement, Cazzell said. But they had to back off when a front brought strong winds to the area. Former club member John Krisman arrived about 6:30 p.m. “It was all white smoke, and then all of a sudden, it got black, and flames shot up out of the back of the building,” he said.
